2 recipes! vegan gravy & gluten-free vegan pumpkin squares

Onward onward, ever onward!  Day 2 of Thanksgiving preparations got off to a rough start.  Gavin stayed home from work with a case of the sniffles & we were busy celebrating my dad’s 71st birthday tonight.  But here I am, still alive.  Ireland is sound asleep and Gavin is watching a documentary about beards, so I have a free minute to check in.

Earlier today I made some mushroom gravy.  A great perk of a plant-based Thanksgiving is being able to make the gravy without waiting around for the turkey to be done.  Because there is no animal fat, it doesn’t get that coagulated, gelatinous skin on the top once it cools, either.  You can just store it in a jar, shake it up, and reheat it when you are ready to serve dinner.  Heating it on the stovetop or in short bursts in the microwave both work fine.  If you choose to reheat in the microwave, treat it as if you are melting chocolate: stir every 30 seconds or so until you get it to the right consistency.  If it becomes too thick upon reheating, add a little extra broth rather than water.  It will have better flavor that way.  Thanksgiving day I am serving Rosemary & Sage Mashed Potatoes from Daily Garnish, so I was inspired by her “White Gravy” recipe.  Since the potato recipe contains steamed apples (a simple, secret ingredient that is so tasty), a traditional dark gravy would overpower rather than compliment the fresh herbs & sweet notes of the mashed ‘taters.  Unfortunately, last year Gavin was NOT a fan of the original gravy & insisted it was “too bland”.  I liked it, so maybe I am bland.  I made a few changes to the recipe this year and was pleased with how it turned out.  I ended up doubling the batch so I can mix some up with my sourdough stuffing and make it creamy.


yields about 2 cups


  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 4-5 organic cremini mushrooms, roughly chopped
  • 4 small organic garlic cloves, minced (reduce to 2 cloves if you aren’t a fan of garlic breath)
  • 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 c water
  • 3 c organic no-chicken broth (I love Imagine brand) or organic vegetable broth
  • 1 cup organic unbleached AP flour*
  • 1 tsp organic dried onions
  • 2 tsp sea salt (I used pink Himalayan salt crystals)
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper

1.  Heat a little olive oil in a medium skillet.

2.  Add your mushrooms and garlic, stirring gently until your garlic becomes fragrant and lightly browned and your mushrooms begin to darken.

3.  Mix in the nutritional yeast, and immediately deglaze the pan with the water, scraping the bottom of the pan (don’t miss any yummy garlicky bits!)

4.  Now comes the tricky part…don’t be nervous.  Slowly add in the flour & broth, whisking constantly.  Don’t give up.  You can do this.  I almost cried (note: I’m super pregnant) because I thought I had a big clumpy mess on my hands but PUSH THROUGH IT!  It will all work out if you just keep whisking.

5.  If the gravy is too thick, add a little more liquid. Once you have reached the consistency you like your gravy to be, season with dried onions, salt, and pepper.  This gravy can take a lot of salt, so don’t be shy.

*Unfortunately, whole wheat flour is not a great choice for gravy.  The low protein & high starch contents of all-purpose flour both do a better job stiffening up the sauce and help you avoid clumps.  It also keeps the gravy from getting that lovely “skin” when it sits for a while.  Corn starch can also be used, and makes a glossier gravy, but it breaks down quickly when you reheat it, so keep that in mind if you are making this recipe ahead of time.

Now!  On to the sweet stuff: Pumpkin Pie Squares!  I snagged this recipe from the blog Straight Up Food, and it is AWESOME just as it is (trust me, I know…we ate an entire pan in one night last week.  whoopsie).  However, I can’t leave well enough alone and added a few ingredients to make it a bit more friendly for the non-health nut members of my extended family who will be joining us on Thursday.  I think it’s best with a little vegan whipped cream, and- lucky for you- I’m making some & sharing the recipe tomorrow!


(Vegan, Gluten Free, Oil-Free, can be No Sugar-Added and Salt-Free)

Yields about 24 small squares


  • 25 pitted organic dates (half a container…about 2 cups diced)
  • 1 1/4 c water
  • 3 c organic rolled oats, blended into flour
  • 1/2 c organic brown sugar or sucanat (optional)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp sea salt (I used pink Himalayan salt crystals)
  • 2 15 oz. cans pureed organic pumpkin
  • 1 Tbsp alcohol-free vanilla
  • 1 c unsweetened almond milk

1.  Dice the dates and soak them in the 1 1/4 c water for about 15 minutes.

2.  Mix dry ingredients (ground oats, brown sugar, pumpkin pie flavoring, and salt) in a large bowl and set aside.

3.  Combine the dates to a blender along with their soaking water, and blend until smooth.

4.  Add the remaining ingredients into the blender with the dates and continue to blend until it looks creamy and smooth.

5.  Add wet ingredients to the dry, and stir until combined.

5.  Pour batter into a greased 9×12 inch pan (or line with parchment to keep truly oil-free) and bake at 375 for 45 mins-1 hour.  If it browns too quickly, don’t trip.  Cover your pan with foil and continue baking until it is cooked through.  If it is a little brown on top, doesn’t jiggle, and has a few cracks, it is probably done.  Cool to room temperature, slice, and refrigerate until you are ready to serve…with vegan whipped cream 🙂  See you tomorrow!

vegan cranberry sauce & a quick toddler lunch

It’s Thanksgiving week!  I am so excited to start the cooking.  First, here’s some news from our weekend:

Gavin surfed in the Carlsbad Classic surf competition this weekend.  He was in the longboard division & made it to the finals.  I was pretty bummed that I missed it (um, we were sleeping in…), but he had a great time.

We stopped by Whole Foods on Saturday afternoon to pick up some Field Roast Apple Sage Sausage (vegan, of course) for our Thanksgiving stuffing and then took a 4 hour nap.  America!!

Sunday we got to see Gavin’s cute sisters who are visiting from college for the holiday.  How cute are Gavin & Paisley?

That brings us back to Monday. And Thanksgiving food. First up, Cranberry Sauce. The easiest Thanksgiving dish on the table to make, by far.  Cranberries naturally contain a lot of pectin, so the resulting “sauce” is actually more of a jelly.  It is one of my favorite holiday dishes and can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container.  Here is my vegan version:

(Yields approximately 2 cups)


  • 3 cups fresh organic cranberries (about a 12 oz bag)
  • zest and juice of 2 organic oranges
  • water as necessary (2 oranges should yield about 1 cup of juice. If you end up with less than this, make up the rest with water.)
  • 1/2 cup- 1 cup of organic vegan sugar* (adjust to your taste.  more sugar makes for a sweeter, less tart sauce)

1.  Rinse and drain your cranberries.

2.  In a medium saucepan, bring your juice, water, and zest to a simmer.  Add the sugar and gently stir until it has dissolved.  This will make a syrup-y base for your sauce.

3.  Once the sugar has dissolved completely, carefully dump in your cranberries.  You will start to hear them pop almost immediately. Let them simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring gently every few minutes to prevent burning.  You will see your berries start to change:

4. When the berries have all burst open & are translucent, remove the pan from heat and let them cool to room temperature. Transfer to an air-tight container and chill until ready to serve.

*Not all sugars are the same.  Conventional granulated sugar actually contains a lot more ingredients than you would expect, one of them being bone char.  We use Trader Joe’s Organic sugar.  It is vegan & a great option if you are avoiding excessive processing, chemicals, or animal ingredients.  They also carry coconut sugar now.  Hooray!

I wanted to also share a quick lunch I made for Ireland earlier today. It was too simple to merit its own post, but hungry little herbivores need to eat, too 🙂 .

(Note: this is not a creamy mac & cheese dish. I have a few heartier recipes I will share in the future. This tastes more like buttered noodles with parmesan, for those of you who still remember what parmesan tastes like…)


  • 1 lb organic whole wheat noodles
  • organic frozen peas
  • earth balance vegan margarine (we use the Soy-Free version)
  • nutritional yeast*
  • powdered garlic (or raw garlic, if you have some on hand)

1.  Cook the noodles according to package directions.

2.  While the noodles are boiling away, place a few handfuls of frozen peas in the bottom of a bowl to thaw a bit.  Don’t defrost them- no one likes soggy peas!

3.  Once the noodles are done, drain them.  I like to rinse my toddler’s with a little cold water to cool it down quickly.

4.  Add noodles, about a teaspoon each of earth balance & nutritional yeast, and a little sprinkle of garlic.

*For those of you going “huh”?  Nutritional yeast is a very nutrient-dense ingredient that can be used as a seasoning.  Many vegans use it because it packs so much b-12.  It has a cheesy flavor and reminds me a bit of parmesan (maybe.  It’s been a while…).  It does take a bit for some people to get used to eating it (and digesting it-lots of nutrients!), so start with a little at a time.  You can find it in the bulk bins at most health food stores.

thanksgiving ketchup.


Time to play catch-up on the old bloggity blog.  I know you guys have missed me!  Truth is, I have been thinking a while about firing up the old blog-engine to share our vegan junk with people.  I get a lot of questions from friends, family members, random strangers at the grocery store….all about how we live.  They want to know what the heck we eat, & I thought that it would be easier to direct people to one place for answers.  I also get a lot of curious minds interested in how we manage our growing toddler’s menu, as well as how I eat as a growing pregnant lady.  I love finding and sharing new recipes, and this seems like the simplest way to do it.

I am going to do a test-run by blogging about Thanksgiving.  This will be our second year as vegan Thanksgiving-ers and I am a little braver & more comfortable with animal-free ingredients now.

Here’s a look at our menu:

  • Baby Spinach & Radicchio salad with Pears, Pecans, & Poppyseed Dressing
  • Apple-Infused Rosemary Sage Mashed Potatoes
  • Mushroom Gravy
  • Creamed Corn Casserole (gotta have it!)
  • Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes with Candied Pecans
  • Orange-Spiced Cranberry Sauce
  • Sourdough Stuffing with Vegan Sausage Stuffed in Whole Roasted Onions (this will be our main course)
  • Whole Wheat Orange Rolls with a Sugary Glaze (vegan-izing my momma’s old recipe)
  • Pecan Pie
  • Pumpkin Bars

Can you tell we like pecans?  Um, and carbs??  We try to eat a bit  more balanced and “lighter”  the rest of the year, but I am a food-crazy pregnant lady right now so our menu is “hearty”, as my sister politely calls it.  I am considering the addition of a Pumpkin-Shallot Soup to the menu as well, but I’m trying not to over-do it so I may save that recipe for next year.  It would be difficult to transport soup to my in-laws on a bumpy 40 minute car ride without spilling/giving me a panic attack anyway 🙂

I will be kicking off Thanksgiving week on Monday with the Cranberry Sauce since it keeps so well in the fridge & I like serving it cold anyway.  My hope is to prepare a few menu items each day and reheat them on Thanksgiving morning so that I can relax a little and enjoy time with my family.  Each night after I make a recipe, I plan to post about it and tell you all how it went.

From there, I want to start sharing more of our day-to-day eating and lifestyle habits as vegans.  How we keep within a small grocery budget, how we convince our toddler to eat kale, and our favorite go-to family recipes are the types of topics I’d like to address.  Hope you join us!

Thoughts on Buddy the Elf, dishes, Real Housewives of Atlanta, and my husband.

I played hookey from the last hour of church yesterday.  My sciatic nerve is mad at the baby for camping out on it, so I walk like a pirate with a wooden leg and those metal church chairs don’t exactly help.  Gavin brought me home and then cleaned the entire house.  Yeah, I know I’m lucky.  I know he’s great.  Please excuse me while I expand on this a little…

Before bed last night, we watched the movie “Elf” to try to squeeze one last bit of Christmas into the weekend.  There’s a part in the movie where Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) goes on a date with Jovie (Zooey Deschanel).  They do very mundane things like buying a “crappy cup of coffee”, skipping across crosswalks, and spinning around in those revolving doors at the entrance of hotels.  Although these things seem pretty ordinary, Buddy is so excited to do them that it makes it fun for Jovie.  He does not stop smiling and laughing through the entire scene.  I jokingly made the remark that being married to Gavin was like being married to Buddy the Elf, and Gav rolled his eyes…but the more I think about it today, the more I realize it’s true.  If you know anything about the movie and you know anything about Gavin, you’re probably nodding your head.  He is so enthusiastic about everything that happens, I can’t help but have a good time no matter what we are doing.  

My case:  While he was washing dishes yesterday (dishes!!) he started singing.  I couldn’t tell what it was at first, but when I concentrated I realized it was “The Ring Didn’t Mean a Thing”.  If you haven’t heard of it, that’s because you’re boring, and probably a lot classier than  me.  Sometimes…I watch Real Housewives of Atlanta.  I know, I know, it’s gross.  I’m gross.  Whatever, it’s out there now and I’m over it.  I love the hair, I love the accents, and I love the drama.  One of the ladies on the show thinks she’s a singer and recorded this awful song that she sings on the show all the time, and that’s what Gav was singing…because MY SWEET HUSBAND who I GUARANTEE YOU would rather be watching the Chargers or Lakers game will sit and watch it with me after a 10 or 12 hour day at work so I don’t have a crazy pregnant lady meltdown.  So there I was yesterday, propped up on the couch surrounded all the pillows he had fluffed for me, praying my baked potato feet would stop swelling, feeling bad for myself, and Gav was scrubbing the dirty pots and pans, singing away.  HOW DO YOU GET THAT HAPPY????  Sure, he’s super good looking, can grow a mean mustache without even trying, and has rad dance moves…but this natural enthusiasm and happiness is why I married him.  He wakes up smiling, tickles and kisses my grumpy attitude away until I’m smiling, smiles at work all day long, comes home and smiles some more, and then goes to sleep smiling.  I’m telling you, he is Buddy the Elf.  Smiling is his favorite.

My point:  Driving home from Gavin’s work this morning, the baby woke up and started her usual morning jazzercise routine in my tummy.  Most mornings I groan and try to move into a position where my ribs are spared her extreme high kicks, but today I tried to stay still and just feel her.  It was so overwhelmingly reassuring to know that this sweet little girl is just as rambunctious as her daddy.  She is Gavin’s daughter, and I’m glad for that.  I can already tell she is just like him.  She can’t sit still, and that makes me love her more and more everyday.  I love my tiny family, and I feel so blessed to be surrounded by so much enthusiasm and joy.  

Sure, Gavin’s not perfect.  Maybe he talks through every movie we go see, but what he says is always funny and makes me laugh super hard.  And maybe he can’t sit still and is basically vibrating with energy all the time.  But you know what?  That makes him a hard worker AND he still has the energy to take me out on a date or sit and talk to me after working all day.  If I tell a joke, he will laugh the loudest and hardest and make me feel like Seinfeld.  If I say something and no one else pays attention or hears me, he loudly proclaims that I am super smart and that no one else in the universe would have thought to say that.  He makes me feel like I’m a lot cooler than I really am, and smothers me with attention.  When I was first pregnant and really sick all the time, he would come in the bathroom and rub my back and hold my hair and then carry me back to bed.  Even now, when I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night (which happens a lot when you’re 9 months pregnant) he rolls over and kisses me on the cheek (or the arm, or the nose or the ear…his aim is a little off at 12 am..and 2 am, and 3 am, and 4 am, and 5…).

Probably no one will read this all the way through because it’s super mushy and gross, but the bottom line here is that I know I got lucky.  I am married to my very best friend.  We have our own language, love each others families, and can spend every waking moment together without getting annoyed.  So thanks for the belly rubs every night, hun.  And the trips to 7-11 across town for juice.  And the 3,000 verses of “Baby Beluga” to get the Sea Monkey to stop kicking and let me sleep.  And the remote control.  And the fluffiest pillow on the bed.  And for being Buddy the Elf.  You can have the whole box of Candy Cane Joe Joes- you just keep doing what you’re doing.

christmas is coming…

…the belly’s getting fat!

Just so you know, I had to lean waaaaay over to see my new (very comfortable) shoes that I snagged at Nordstrom Rack on black friday.  We did buy one other item that day, and it’ll be delivered tomorrow…so expect another post on that soon 🙂

In other news, we bought a rocking chair for our baby girl’s room!  It’s super comfortable and upholstered in the happiest green fabric I have ever seen.  I’ll admit I’m pretty dang proud of this find- it is in perfect condition and has all of the original upholstery and hardware from when it was originally manufactured at a local San Diego furniture company.  It rocks and spins and even came with a cute bundle of vintage pillows.  Here’s a shot of it in the shop before we brought it home:

Last thing I have to share is the Christmas craft that Gav was so sweet to help me with.  Being this pregnant keeps me from rearranging furniture and cooking extravagant meals this holiday, so I’ve gotten slightly crafty.  Blame it on the boredom (at least I’m blogging more, right?? Two days in a row has to count for something).  It was a pretty simple project- wrap a foam wreath in yarn, make flowers out of felt, and glue them on.  Anyway, here’s the project halfway through:

I can’t get the pictures of the final product to upload, and I’m running out of patience, so I”ll try again tomorrow…maybe…

update, update!

I have been royally awful at updating our blog.  I just don’t feel like much has changed…

oh, wait.  We moved into a new place in a new town, my belly is getting bigger everyday, and TONS of things are changing.  So here’s the scoop:

Our new place is great.  A littler further inland (like three minutes…I’m such a baby), but it’s twice the size of our tiny loft by the beach, it has a great big kitchen and there is an extra bedroom for our tiny babe!  Gavin’s favorite part is the garage.  It’s my favorite too…because it means we don’t have any surfboards on the floor in the living room.  Other perks include our own washer and dryer, an enormous master bedroom, and we can paint (!!!).  The living room is still under construction (christmas crafts galore!) but I’ll post some pictures after we get our Christmas tree this weekend. 

As far as the pregnancy goes, everything was smooth sailing…and then i got super sick.  Allergies, asthma, and cold weather combined with an intense cold that took me out for about two and a half weeks.  Late last Saturday night I was coughing super hard and my poor body decided it couldn’t take it anymore.  I started showing signs of preterm labor.  I chalked it up to being sick and needing more sleep.  I’m a chronic under-reactor.  Gavin didn’t buy it.  He’s definitely the worrier in this relationship.  By morning we (read: Gavin) decided I needed to go get checked out, so we headed to the hospital.  It was pouring rain when we got to the ER and I was openly annoyed and wanted to just turn around and go home.  I was super embarrassed by the time we got to see a doctor.  I felt like I was taking up a bed for real sick people, and was super apologetic to everyone I saw.  The nurses were pretty amused that I kept telling them how sorry I was when they had to take my pulse or check the machines monitoring my contractions.  Gavin ended up having to say a lot of things like “yes, she is always like this” and “it’s okay, honey, it’s their job”.

After a short wait, the on-call OBGYN came in to check on the baby and examine me.  (IF YOU ARE A BOY OR ARE GENERALLY GROSSED OUT BY BODY PARTS, SKIP THE NEXT FEW PARTS OF THE STORY.  THAT MEANS YOU, DAD.  SPOILER ALERT:  IT ALL TURNS OUT OK)  I figured she would check me quickly, tell me everything was fine, give me a lollypop and send me on my way.  I couldn’t wait to rub it in Gavin’s face the whole way home.  It didn’t really go down that way.  After checking things out, the doctor told us that I would need to be moved into the maternity ward to be monitored.  Apparently I was dilated a little more than 1 centimeter and had lost my mucous plug (Ickkkk, I know.  You can’t say I didn’t warn you).  Whatever you do, DON’T google “mucous plug”.  You’ll regret it.  I’ll tell you what it is so you can avoid looking it up:  it’s basically a layer of mucous that the body develops wayyy up in your business by the baby.  It’s in place to protect the baby from infection or bacteria.  There.  That wasn’t too bad, was it?  (YOU CAN START READING AGAIN HERE, DAD) Gavin asked the lady doc if everything was ok, and I quickly jumped in and answered “Oh yeah, hun.  This is totally normal.  My body is just preparing for labor.  This happens to everyone, right?”  The answer was no.  I was only 32 weeks at the time, and that’s really too early for anything to be going on down in the baby incubator.  Dang.  So, Gavin was right (when was that even allowed to happen???) and the hospital was where I needed to be.  I was wheeled down to labor and delivery, which was super freaky.  Gavin started saying fun and exciting things like “What if the baby comes today?” and “You can go into labor any minute!”  Ermmmm…wow.  I got to be on monitors for 4 hours, and examined like 40 more awkward and humiliating times.  Another fun highlight was when an ER nurse took my pulse right on top of the spot where someone had just drawn blood.  Yeeeeooowwwch.  

On the brighter side, the maternity ward at Scripps Encinitas is nothing short of amazing.  We were so impressed.  Our nurse was a sweetheart, the room was private and huge, and the whole place felt so fancy.  (Note: the juice at Scripps Encinitas is so so SO delicious.  HELLO passionfruit-guava with crushed ice.  They even have bendy straws.  Are you listening to me, people??? I said crushed ice and bendy straws!!!).  At the end of the day, the doctor decided it would be safe to send me home under the condition that I met with my own baby doctor first thing in the morning.

 Long story….trying to shorten it…basically she isn’t going anywhere for now.   I’ve been put on “modified bedrest”  which is just a fancy way of saying “take it easy, big mama”.  Fine by me.  I’m currently cuddled up on the couch with my down comforter switching back and forth between Top Chef and Paula Deen’s cooking show.  Am I drooling??  Consequently, I have come to the conclusion that I need more mashed potatoes, butter, poached pears and semifreddo in my life.  TV can be so convincing.

and we’re back.

It’s been a good 8 months since my last post…but in just a short amount of time, life has changed drastically.  We found out a few months ago that we are expecting(!) and life has been a whirlwind of changes ever since.  Lately our spare time has been spent drooling over pictures of nurseries, noticing babies EVERYWHERE, searching for a bigger place, and saving money for our first family car.  The news was kind of overwhelming at first, and I’ll admit I doubted my readiness little, but everything is slowly falling into place.  Gav got an opportunity for a full-time route at work, so I will be able to stay at home with the baby.  Both sides of the family have come to the rescue with tons of advice and help on how to prepare, and we just happen to have the BEST health insurance.  We feel very blessed.

I have to give one shout out: Gav has been super-husband.  I have slowly turned into a monster (weepy, nauseated, sneezy, and very VERY tired) and he’s adjusted like a champ (breakfast in bed EVERY morning, anyone?).  I don’t know how anyone does this pregnancy thing without a Gavin around.  I’m thinking about hiring him out in the future  for some kind of “pregnancy pampering service”.  We’d make a killing.

Lastly, I want to compile a short-list of things I haven’t been able to live without so far this pregnancy.  I’m almost 4 months, so things may be added to this list as time (and my stomach) stretches on.

1.  Gap Maternity Favorite Tee (black)

Oh, the things to love about this tee.  I own two already, and plan on buying a few long-sleeved ones in the fall/winter.  It’s stretchy, lightweight, and it BREATHES (brownie points for the days when hot flashes join your repertoire of ever-growing talents).  I also like that it’s a crewneck, but the collar line doesn’t choke me.  Now that I realize that my stomach isn’t the only *ahem* body part that is growing, even the highest v-necks are out of the question because mommy-cleavage seems indecent to me and mine seems to creep toward my neck more and more everyday.  This crewneck is just perfect.  My favorite is black because I like to pretend I look teensie when I wear it, even though it looks like I’m hiding a bowling ball under my shirt.

2.  Body Pillow

I got mine at Costco for $12.00.  I used to be the super-snuggly type, but EXTREME sensitivity to smells has changed that quickly.  I love Gav, but sometimes a non-scented pillow is the only option for any kind of rest (as long as I’m pregnant, at least).  Because I’m such a small human, it was too full when i bought it.  I took some of the stuffing out so I can bear-hug the whole pillow while I sleep.  It makes a huge difference in comfort AND works to help me stay on my side while I sleep (who doesn’t love multi-functional items, America?)

3.  Sports Bra

It STRETCHES.  Enough said.

4.  Belly Band

I actually bought the cheaper version by the same company called the “Be Band” at Target.  Why haven’t I been using this my whole life?  I should have at least been bringing it along to Thanksgiving dinner…just in case.  It kept me in my favorite skinny jeans for the first few months, and is still helping me work my office wear.  It even helps out at church (how many of YOUR clothes do that?)- I just leave my skirt unzipped and slide the belly band around the top to keep it up.  With a long shirt over it, you don’t even notice, so I fool everybody.  AND I LOVE FOOLING YOU GUYS.  Just kidding.  No I’m not.  Ha, I fooled you again.

5.  Old Navy Yoga Pants

These babies are a life-saver.  While I’m still able to wear my office pants with the help of my “Be Band”, and unclosed zipper is super itchy against sensitive pregnant lady skin, and by the end of the day I don’t want ANYTHING to touch my stomach.  That’s where stretchy pants save the day.  I love old navy ones because they have a stretchy tab at the top instead of a drawstring, and theyre soft and stretchy but not shiny (who wants shiny pants when they’re not clubbing?  or cross-dressing?).  They get me from the grocery store to the in-laws to the laundrymat to napping in one outfit.  And they’re not even embarrassing to wear, you guys.  They look like everyone else’s pants.  I like fitting in (and fitting in pants no matter how much the baby decided to grow overnight) so these are a keeper.

6.  Maternity Jeans (duh)

I’m a simple girl, so I do alright with basic tees and straight-leg jeans with elastic in the waistband.  I just accessorize with cute shoes and a fun haircut…and tell myself that no one judges pregnant ladies for not being stylish.  Right?  RIGHT??!!!

7.  Nailpolish

This probably seems so silly, but on days when my face is peeling AND breaking out (helllooooo, teenage skin) and none of my clothes want to fit, it’s nice to look down through tear-rimmed eyes and see that at least one part of me looks pretty.  I have been pampering my toes and hands for a few reasons.  First of all, I know I won’t have the time to do things like this for myself when the baby comes.  Secondly, because it makes me FEEL polished and girly, even if I don’t really look like it.

8.  Flats

My shoe size hasn’t expanded yet, but when it does, I’ll be ready.  I love flats with elastic in the back.  Clearly, stretch factor is a big deal for me right now.  Another reason for flats playing a big part in my wardrobe is my lack of coordination.  My center of gravity must be off now, because I am prone to falling over (is it just me?  or does this happen to everyone else?).  Flats make the fall shorter.  Plus, they’re comfy without leaving the impression that I’m sporty in any way.
